Detail information
A story from distant lands and times in the masterful opera by the divine Czech composer. Josef Mysliveček captivated Italy in his day, and now one of his operas is coming to Pilsen for the first time. Josef Mysliveček’s music thrilled Italian audiences in his day, who knew the composer, originally from Prague, as “Il Boemo.” He was also an inspiration for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and has recently been experiencing a renaissance of interest among opera lovers around the world. Mysliveček composed his stage works exclusively in the supreme genre of the Baroque era, opera seria, which was based on historical, exotic, or mythological themes and provided space for virtuoso performances by singers.
The work, originally titled Il gran Tamerlano, was premiered in Milan in 1771 on the occasion of the annual carnival. The story of the power of desire and the ability to renounce it, set in the medieval Ottoman Empire, became the most frequently performed opera of its time. With Tamerlano, Josef Mysliveček is coming to the stage of the Pilsen theatre for the first time ever. The production will be staged by renowned Slovenian director Rocc and leading Czech conductorVojtěch Spurný. The title role has been entrusted to Vojtěch Pelka, a sought-after
countertenor and pioneer in his field in the Czech Republic.
